The synergy of these two musicians is magical. Their styles blend so well it sounds as if they have played together their entire lives.
Some who have heard Jon R Smith play compare his distinctive rich, powerful and breathy sound to that of Gene Ammons, Plas Johnson and David “Fathead” Newman. Born in Southern Louisiana, Jon, along with childhood friends Edgar Winter and Jerry LaCroix, formed the now legendary Edgar Winter’s White Trash band in the latter part of 1969. Jon’s dominant tenor sax sound and solid horn arrangements played a key role in the overall sound and success of the group. Jon R Smith has a musical background that includes Albert Collins, the Grammy Award-winning group Toto, Boz Scaggs, Philip Glass, Dr. John, Randy Newman, The Rascals, Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Winter, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown,Doobie Brothers, and European superstar Peter Maffay, just to name a few.
Frank Ball has played with members of Edgar Winter's White Trash, Ronnie Barron, Members of the Four Seasons, Thad Richard of Paul McCartney's Wings, and Roosevelt Sykes.Frank spent years in the New Orleans area and later Los Angeles.
Both musicians owe their style to the R&B sound of New Orleans and the Smooth Jazz sounds of contemporary jazz. They love taking popular hits like "September" and "Ruby Baby" and interpreting them instrumentally or taking a classic like "My Funny Valentine" and giving it a modern twist. Frank and Jon reside in South Louisiana and perform in lots of venues for diverse audiences. They cover styles that include blues, R&B, Funk, hip hop, smooth jazz, and pop.
Frank and Jon want to give special thanks to their loving wives and soulmates, Karen Borowski Ball and JoLynn Smith, for their continuing love and understanding. Frank & Jon want to express their gratitude to Jack Bunn and Jimmy George for suggesting they play together. A big note of appreciation goes out to Darren, Gene, and Patricia Kraemer for giving them the wonderful venue of Vino! to perform and record. Vino! is a great club in Houma, La. about 45 miles south of New Orleans. Most of all, THANKS to ALL of Frank & Jon’s friends, family, and fans who are a constant source of inspiration.
